Learning Target

Students will write a personal narrative about a real experience in their life. Students will use a checklist to evaluate and revise their work.

Lesson Overview

You will write a personal narrative (story about a real event in your life). After writing your story, you will use the checklist to check and revise your work.

Assignment

Think of a time that you did something special with a friend and write a story about it. The events should be real, but be sure to add many descriptive words in your narrative. Remember that a personal narrative can also include dialogue between two people. You will be the narrator in the story so refer to yourself as “I”. Click on the Personal Narrative Checklist below. If you are able to print out the checklist, please use it to check your writing. If not, I will provide a copy for you when we return to school. Have fun and be creative!!!

           My story has a title (1)

           My story is about a time I spent with someone special (1)

           My story gives the name of this special person (1)

           My story gives details about the time I spent with this person (5)

           My story has a beginning, middle, end (3)

           I spell most grade level words correctly (2)

           I use interesting words (2)

           I use variety in my sentences and do not begin the sentences the same (2)

           I have complete sentences and my sentences do not run together (2)

           I use correct capitalization for proper nouns and at the beginning of sentences (2)

           I use correct end marks (2)

           I use correct grammar (since we recently learned about nouns, this skill is focused on the spelling and use of plural nouns, capitalizing proper nouns, and using possessives correctly if they are used) (2)
