To enhance their writing, students will add descriptive words and phrases to help the reader understand the experiences and events.
Lesson Overview
You will use replace words and phrases in sentences with more vivid words to make the sentence more interesting and clearer. You will then apply this skill when writing descriptive paragraph about something important that you own.
Task #1
Adding details: Telling more to make your sentences more exciting!
Words such as nice, neat, pretty , fun, great, good, and cool don’t help readers understand what you are trying to say. You can make your writing more vivid and clearer by replacing these words with details that tell more.
Examples:
Okay: I like that restaurant because it is fun.
Better: I like that restaurant because it has huge TV screens and video games.
Okay: I bought a cool purse.
Better: I bought a black, shiny purse with sparkles on the straps
Task #2
On a piece of notebook paper, recopy the following sentences after replacing the underlined words with words that tell more details. You can replace them with details from below, or make up your own. The first one has been done for you.
had a sharp, wet turn, and a sudden plunge into a pool
was covered with blinking colored lights
had three loops and a terrifying dive
exciting rides, a go card track, and great games
hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, and ice cream
work in groups, read exciting stories
Example: I love reading becauseit is always fun.
I love reading because we get to work in groups and read exciting stories.
1. We loved our trip to the Amusement Park because it hadcool things.
2. The roller coaster ride was really neat.
3. My parents bought us all kinds of good food.
4. Our favorite ride was the water slide ,which was so fun!
5. My mom and I went on a Ferris wheel that looked so pretty.
Assignment
Write a paragraph on the bottom or back of the same paper. Describe something you own, and tell why you care about it. Do not use the words below. Use details that tell more. Remember to use a topic sentence and concluding sentence just like we always do (the umbrella!)
